The K-Beauty Mask Dictionary: The Right Korean Face Mask for Every Skin Concern

"A mask is the most concentrated fifteen minutes in a skincare routine, but only if it matches what your skin needs that day. Dry, red, breaking out, dull or losing bounce: each calls for a different mask, and a different format. Following our Dictionary Series, I've matched two Korean masks to each of five concerns, after using every one of them at least three times. Find your concern, pick your mask."

The short answer: which mask for which concern?

Dry and tight? A ceramide sheet mask, or an overnight hydrogel. Red and reactive? A centella or guaiazulene calming mask. Breaking out? Tea tree, plus clay on oily zones. Dull and tired? A vitamin or snail mask before you go out. Losing bounce? A collagen or PDRN hydrogel. Two or three masks a week is plenty; keep one for your everyday concern and one for big days.

Sheet masks

15–20 minutes, two or three times a week. The fastest boost.

Hydrogel masks

Solid gel that doesn't dry out. Some are for 20 minutes, some for overnight; check the instructions.

Wash-off and clay

A few minutes on oily zones to absorb excess sebum. Once or twice a week.

Not sure whether you need a sheet mask or an overnight mask? Start with sheet mask vs overnight mask. Building the rest of the routine? See the Toner Dictionary, Serum Dictionary and Moisturizer Dictionary.

Your Korean Face Mask Questions, Answered

How often, how long, and where masks fit in the routine.

How often should I use a face mask?

Two or three times a week for sheet masks, once or twice a week for clay and overnight hydrogels. More often is rarely needed; consistency matters more than frequency.

Where does a face mask go in my routine?

Sheet and 20-minute hydrogel masks go after cleansing and toner, before serum and moisturizer. Clay masks go after cleansing. Overnight masks go last, over your moisturizer.

Can I use two different masks in one week?

Yes. Many people keep one mask for their everyday concern and another for special occasions, or use clay on the T-zone and a hydrating mask on the cheeks.

Do I need to rinse after a sheet mask?

No. Pat the leftover essence into the skin and follow with moisturizer. Only clay and wash-off masks need rinsing.
