Sheet Mask vs Overnight Mask: Can You Sleep in a Sheet Mask, and Which One Does Your Skin Need?

"'Can I just sleep in my sheet mask?' is one of the questions I hear most, and the answer is almost always no. But there are now hydrogel masks that are designed to be slept in, which makes the rules confusing. Sheet masks, sleeping masks and overnight hydrogels do different jobs on different timescales. Here is how each one works, when to use which, and the pair from each category I keep in my own bathroom."

The short answer: can you sleep in a sheet mask?

No, not a fabric sheet mask. Sheet masks are made for 15 to 20 minutes. Once the sheet starts drying, water evaporates from both the sheet and your skin's surface, so leaving it on longer won't add hydration and can leave skin feeling tighter. Overnight masks are different products: sleeping masks and some hydrogel masks are formulated to stay on for hours. Use a sheet mask for a quick boost, and an overnight mask to seal in your night routine.

Sheet mask

A fabric or bamboo sheet soaked in essence. 15–20 minutes, two or three times a week. Fast hydration and glow.

Sleeping mask

A gel, jelly or film applied as the last night step. Seals in your routine overnight to reduce water loss.

Overnight hydrogel

A solid gel mask, like Biodance's Real Deep Mask, designed to stay on for hours. Not all hydrogels are: check the instructions.

Overnight Masks to Seal In Your Routine: Abib Barrier Jelly vs Medicube Night Wrapping Mask

Sleeping masks go on last, over your moisturizer, and stay on overnight. They reduce water loss while you sleep, which is when skin loses the most. A jelly suits most skin; a peel-off film is for skin that needs a stronger seal.

Abib Rice Probiotics Overnight Mask Barrier Jelly (80ml)

A bouncy jelly sleeping mask with fermented rice bran: light enough for combination skin, and it never ends up on the pillow.

The jelly forms a light layer over your night routine, and fermented rice bran helps calm and brighten. It's the overnight mask I can use several nights a week without feeling heavy. Vegan, fragrance-free, alcohol-free, dermatologically-tested, pregnancy-friendly and made with clean ingredients.

Best for: combination, sensitive and dry skin; dehydration; regular use.Less suited to: very dry skin in deep winter on its own.

Editor’s tip: A thin layer is enough; more doesn't seal better, it just transfers.

Your Sheet Mask and Overnight Mask Questions, Answered

Sleeping in masks, rinsing, and how often to use them.

Can you sleep in a sheet mask?

No. Fabric sheet masks are designed for 15 to 20 minutes. As the sheet dries, water evaporates from both the sheet and your skin's surface, so a longer wear doesn't add hydration. Remove it while still damp and pat in the leftover essence.

Do I rinse after a sheet mask or overnight mask?

After a sheet mask, no: pat in the remaining essence and follow with moisturizer. After an overnight mask, cleanse as usual in the morning, or peel off a film mask and rinse.

Can I use a sheet mask every day?

Gentle hydrating sheet masks can be used often, but two or three times a week is enough for most people. Daily use is rarely necessary.

Can I use a sheet mask and an overnight mask on the same night?

Yes. Use the sheet mask after toner, pat in the essence, apply your moisturizer, then finish with the overnight mask as the very last step.
