The K-Beauty Toner Dictionary: The Right Korean Toner for Every Skin Concern

"The minute after cleansing decides how well everything else in your routine works, and in Korean skincare that minute belongs to the toner. But 'toner' now covers watery hydrators, exfoliating liquids, rich essence toners and pads. I've matched two toners to each of five concerns, after using every one of them for at least three weeks. Find your concern, pick your toner."

Dictionary Series: Cleansing · Serum · Moisturizer · Eye Care · Mask

First: which kind of toner do you need?

Large pores or breakouts? An exfoliating toner or pad. Red and reactive? A calming, fragrance-free toner. Dull? A ferment or propolis essence toner. Dry and flaky? A cushiony essence toner, or a very mild exfoliating one. Losing firmness? A PDRN pad or an antioxidant toner. Apply toner straight after cleansing, before serum.

Hydrating toner

Watery and calming. Can be layered two or three times.

Exfoliating toner

AHA, BHA or PHA to clear pores and smooth texture. Not every day for everyone.

Essence toner

Thicker and richer: half toner, half essence. Good for dry or dull skin.

Toner pads

Pre-soaked pads to swipe or leave on as a mini mask. Convenient, often with actives.

Not sure whether you need toner and essence? Read toner vs essence vs serum vs ampoule. In a hard-water area? Here's why toner matters more.

Your Korean Toner Questions, Answered

Layering, exfoliating and pads.

Do I really need a toner?

Not always, but it helps: a toner rehydrates and rebalances skin straight after cleansing, removes residue left by hard water, and helps the next steps absorb.

Can I use an exfoliating toner every day?

Mild ones, like the Round LAB Dokdo Toner, yes. Stronger acid toners and pads are best two or three times a week, and never on the same night as retinol.

What is the 7-skin method?

Applying a hydrating toner in several thin layers, letting each absorb before the next. It works best with calming, fragrance-free toners.

Which toners are pregnancy-friendly?

Hydrating and calming toners such as Anua Heartleaf, Pyunkang Yul and Haruharu Black Rice carry our Pregnancy-Friendly highlight. Exfoliating toners with BHA and pads with retinol do not.
