The Skincare Koreans Actually Use: 3 Korean Bestsellers Europe Hasn't Discovered Yet

"Ask a friend in Seoul what is in her bathroom and you won't hear the names trending on TikTok. You'll hear a clinic cream her paediatrician recommended, a mung bean foam that has passed twenty million units, and the barrier cream Olive Young sells faster than any other. All three are household names in Korea and still almost unknown in Europe, mostly because they grew up in Korean dermatology clinics and drugstore aisles rather than on social media. Every time I fly home, these are the three I find on my family's shelf. Here is what each one does, who it suits, and which barrier cream to choose if you only buy one."

The short answer: which of the three do you need?

Very dry, itchy or reactive skin, or a household that shares one cream? ZEROID Intensive Cream. Dry, sensitive skin that wants a lighter finish under makeup? AESTURA Atobarrier 365 Cream. Oily or combination skin that ends every cleanse either shiny or tight? Beplain Mung Bean pH-Balanced Cleansing Foam. The foam plus one of the two creams is a complete Korean barrier routine on its own.

I chose them with three filters: popularity in Korea that we could verify with sales figures and awards rather than hype, low awareness in Europe so far, and a real reason they matter here, where hard tap water and heated winters wear the barrier down. All three are fragrance-free and pregnancy-friendly.

The clinic cream

ZEROID launched in 2002 as a line sold only through Korean hospitals and clinics. The brand reports it is now stocked in around 70% of Korea's dermatology clinics and 80% of its paediatric clinics, and it won the dermocosmetic category of Korea's Most Recommended Brand by Customers awards in 2025 and 2026.

The everyday cleanser

Beplain's low-pH foam is built on mung bean extract instead of water. More than 20 million units have been supplied to Korean shelves (cumulative to May 2026, per Olive Young), which is why Koreans nickname it the "national cleanser".

The bestseller

AESTURA is Amorepacific's dermatology brand. Its Atobarrier 365 Cream topped Olive Young's cream awards in 2024 and 2025, has passed nine million units, and the brand says one now sells roughly every five seconds in Korea.

How I tested. Four weeks on my own combination, breakout-prone skin, with hard Central European tap water and the first radiator days of autumn. The foam morning and evening throughout; for the final fortnight, ZEROID on my left cheek and AESTURA on my right, to see where the two creams really differ. Neither broke me out and nothing stung. The details, and the honest limits of each product, are below.

"By evening my skin is so dry it itches, but every rich cream I try leaves me shiny and congested."

ZEROID Intensive Cream: Korea's Clinic Barrier Cream for Very Dry, Sensitive Skin

In Korea, ZEROID is what a dermatologist or paediatrician hands you when the barrier itself is the problem. It started as a clinic-only line, and that is still how many Korean families find it: one tube for a child's dry cheeks, and before long everyone in the house is using it, on the face and the body.

ZEROID Intensive Cream (80ml)

A high-moisture barrier cream that arranges its lipids in the same layered pattern as healthy skin. In testing it kept skin hydrated for up to 120 hours, and it leaves no greasy film.

Most rich creams work by sitting on top of the skin. ZEROID's MLE® (Multi-Lamellar Emulsion) technology, developed by the Korean dermatology company NeoPharm, arranges ceramide, phytosterols and fatty acids in the multi-layered structure the barrier uses itself, so the formula works with the barrier instead of just coating it. Defensamide™, NeoPharm's patented ingredient, supports the skin's own defences and calms the redness that comes with dryness, while squalane, shea butter and olive oil soften. In a 2024 test by the Korea Dermatology Research Institute on 23 adults, moisture lasted up to 120 hours; the brand also reports a 2.5-fold improvement in a damaged barrier after one use and 69% less dryness-related itching after two weeks. The texture is thick and cushiony, melts at skin temperature and settles into a soft, non-shiny finish within a few minutes. On my left cheek it was the side that never felt tight, even on the first cold morning. Hypoallergenic- and non-comedogenic-tested, fragrance-free, vegan and pregnancy-friendly.

Best for: very dry, tight, flaky or itchy skin; eczema-prone dryness; a barrier worn down by retinol, acids or winter; dry skin that breaks out under heavy creams; the whole family, on face and body.Less suited to: very oily skin in summer, or anyone who wants a gel texture. Use a lighter lotion by day and keep ZEROID for the night.

Editor’s tip: Apply it within three minutes of washing, on skin that is still slightly damp, and leave a thicker layer on dry patches overnight. Starting retinol? ZEROID is the buffer layer in our Retinol Starter Kit (sandwich method).

Beplain Mung Bean Cleansing Foam: Korea's Everyday Low-pH Cleanser for Oily and Combination Skin

This is the foam you find in Korean gym bags, office drawers and family bathrooms alike, because very few skin types argue with it. Of the three products here, it is the one oily skin will appreciate most.

Beplain Mung Bean pH-Balanced Cleansing Foam (80ml)

33% mung bean extract in place of water, gentle amino-acid cleansers and a skin-friendly pH: it clears oil and everyday sunscreen thoroughly, then rinses off without the squeaky, tight feeling.

The base of this foam is mung bean extract, a long-standing Korean ingredient for clearing excess oil, with a little finely milled mung bean powder for very soft physical polishing. The cleansing agents are amino-acid based (sodium cocoyl glycinate and sodium lauroyl glutamate), so they lift sebum, light makeup and fine dust without stripping, and the formula sits at a slightly acidic pH close to the skin's own. Ceramide NP, centella, green tea and hyaluronic acid keep the barrier comfortable. A pea-sized amount whips into a dense, creamy lather and rinses clean in seconds. Afterwards my T-zone stayed matte for longer than with my usual gel cleanser, and my cheeks did not feel tight. Fragrance-free, vegan, pregnancy-friendly and non-comedogenic-tested.

Best for: oily, combination and blemish-prone skin; sensitive skin that reacts to stronger foams; morning and evening use; the second step of a double cleanse.Less suited to: removing waterproof makeup or a heavy sunscreen on its own (use a cleansing oil or balm first); very dry skin in mid-winter, which may prefer a milky cleanser in the morning.

Editor’s tip: Work it into a thick lather in wet palms before it touches your face, then massage the T-zone and the sides of the nose for about 40 seconds and rinse with lukewarm water. On makeup days, pair it with a balm, as in our Double Cleanse Duo for Combination Skin.

AESTURA Atobarrier 365 Cream: The Barrier Cream Korea Buys Most

If ZEROID is the clinic's cream, Atobarrier 365 is the nation's. It began in 2008 as a clinic-only cream from Amorepacific's dermatology arm, reached Olive Young in 2018, and has since become the best-selling barrier cream in the country. We have tested the full Atobarrier line in depth elsewhere; here is why the cream earns its place on this list.

AESTURA Atobarrier 365 Cream (80ml)

Patented high-density ceramide capsules that melt into the skin. In testing, a damaged barrier improved twofold within ten minutes and skin stayed hydrated for up to 120 hours.

The Atobarrier 365 Cream rebuilds the barrier from the three lipids the skin uses itself, ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids, and packs long-chain and "linker" ceramides into visible capsules. AESTURA's patented capsule technology keeps the ceramide in the barrier longer: in the brand's laboratory testing, 190% more ceramide remained 18 hours after application than with a non-capsule formula. Niacinamide and allantoin calm redness. The texture is richer than a lotion but noticeably lighter than ZEROID; the capsules melt as you spread, it settles in three to four minutes and leaves a soft sheen rather than a film. On my right cheek it sat better under sunscreen and makeup than ZEROID did, but on the coldest morning it was the side that wanted a second layer. Fragrance-free, alcohol-free, hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic and pregnancy-friendly.

Best for: dry and sensitive skin; skin that feels tight underneath; skin that stings with active ingredients; a daily cream that layers well under SPF and makeup.Less suited to: severely dry, itchy skin or windy winter days on its own, where ZEROID seals better; oily or acne-prone skin, which should try the Atobarrier 365 Lotion instead.

Editor’s tip: Smooth it on with your palms rather than your fingertips so the capsules melt evenly. Not sure whether you need the Cream or the Lotion? Our AESTURA Atobarrier 365 Cream vs Lotion guide settles it with a six-week split-face test.

ZEROID vs AESTURA: Which Korean Barrier Cream Should You Choose?

Both come from Korean dermatology brands, both replace the lipids a weak barrier is missing, and both are fragrance-free and pregnancy-friendly. The difference is weight and job. ZEROID is the heavier, more protective cream, for skin that is actively dry, itchy or cracked and for families who share one tube. AESTURA is the lighter daily cream, for sensitive skin that is dry underneath but wants to look fresh under makeup. If your skin is in crisis, start with ZEROID; once it is calm, AESTURA is the one you will reach for every morning. Many people end up with both: ZEROID at night, AESTURA by day.

Product Role Korean track record Best for Less suited to Texture & finish
Beplain Mung Bean Foam Cleanser, AM & PM 20M+ units supplied to Korean shelves Oily, combination, blemish-prone, sensitive Waterproof makeup on its own; very dry winter mornings Dense, creamy lather; soft, not squeaky
ZEROID Intensive Cream Barrier cream, PM or both Clinic-born; 2025–2026 dermocosmetic award winner Very dry, itchy, eczema-prone; the whole family Very oily skin in summer; gel-texture fans Thick and cushiony; soft, non-shiny
AESTURA Atobarrier 365 Cream Barrier cream, AM or both Olive Young cream award 2024 & 2025; 9M+ sold Dry and sensitive; tight underneath; under SPF and makeup Severe dryness alone; oily, acne-prone skin Rich but light; capsules melt; soft sheen

All three are fragrance-free and pregnancy-friendly; ZEROID and Beplain are vegan. None contains retinoids or exfoliating acids, so they sit alongside any active you already use.

How Koreans actually use them: a three-step barrier routine

The everyday routine in Korea is rarely ten steps. Far more often it is a gentle cleanser, one hydrating or treatment step, and a barrier cream. Here is that routine built from these three.

Morning

Beplain foam (or just lukewarm water if your skin is very dry), your toner or serum, a thin layer of AESTURA Atobarrier 365 Cream, then sunscreen as the last step.

Evening

An oil or balm first on makeup days, then the Beplain foam, then your serum or active, then ZEROID Intensive Cream, with a thicker layer on any dry patches.

Heating season

Cream goes on damp skin within three minutes of washing. Hard water leaves skin tight; a low-pH foam and a barrier cream straight after are the fix. ZEROID also works overnight on hands, elbows and around the nose.

Your Questions About Korea's Hidden Bestsellers, Answered

Why they are hard to find in Europe, which cream to choose, and who can use them.

Why are ZEROID, AESTURA and Beplain so popular in Korea but hard to find in Europe?

ZEROID and AESTURA both began as clinic-only brands, sold through Korean hospitals and dermatology clinics before they reached retail, so their reputation was built with doctors and patients rather than on global social media. Beplain grew through Olive Young, Korea's largest beauty retailer, and word of mouth. All three are only now expanding outside Korea, which is why they are still unfamiliar to most European shoppers.

ZEROID or AESTURA: which is better for eczema-prone skin?

Both are designed for dry, sensitive and eczema-prone skin and both replace missing barrier lipids. For skin that is actively dry, itchy or cracked, choose ZEROID Intensive Cream, the heavier and more protective of the two. For daily maintenance that sits well under makeup, choose AESTURA Atobarrier 365 Cream. Both are cosmetics, not medical treatments: if you have diagnosed atopic dermatitis, follow your dermatologist's plan and ask before adding either one.

Can children and pregnant women use ZEROID Intensive Cream?

ZEROID Intensive Cream is fragrance-free, carries our Pregnancy-Friendly highlight, and is widely used by Korean families: the brand reports it is stocked in around 80% of Korea's paediatric clinics. For babies, especially under six months or with diagnosed eczema, ask your paediatrician first and patch-test on a small area. Our guide to gentle care for you and your baby explains what we look for in family-safe formulas, and every product that meets our pregnancy criteria is in the Pregnancy-Friendly collection.

Does the Beplain Mung Bean Foam remove makeup and sunscreen?

It removes light makeup and an everyday sunscreen with a thorough 40-second massage. For waterproof mascara, long-wear foundation or a water-resistant sunscreen, use a cleansing oil or balm first and the Beplain foam second. That double cleanse is explained in our K-Beauty Cleansing Dictionary.

Is the Beplain Mung Bean Foam suitable for dry or sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin, generally yes: it is fragrance-free, low-pH and uses mild amino-acid cleansers. Very dry skin can use it in the evening, and may prefer just water or a milky cleanser in the morning. It contains a fine mung bean powder for soft polishing, so avoid rubbing it over broken or freshly irritated skin.
