Pregnancy-Safe Skincare: Which Ingredients to Pause, What to Use Instead, and a Gentle K-Beauty Routine

"Pregnancy changes skin in ways nobody warns you about: new sensitivity, breakouts, dryness, more pigmentation. At the same time, some of the most effective actives are ones you're usually advised to pause. Our fifth KKUMIDA standard, Pregnancy-Friendly, is a conservative ingredient screen to make that easier. Here is what it excludes, what is generally considered fine, and a gentle routine built from products that pass. It's a starting point, not medical advice: your doctor or midwife has the final word."

The short answer: what to pause during pregnancy

The ingredients most commonly advised against during pregnancy and breastfeeding are retinoids (retinol, retinal, retinyl esters and prescription retinoids), hydroquinone, and leave-on salicylic acid beyond low levels. Our Pregnancy-Friendly label excludes all three in leave-on products; low-level salicylic acid in a rinse-off cleanser can qualify. When anything is unclear, we leave the label off.

Usually paused

Retinoids, hydroquinone and leave-on salicylic acid. Check eye creams, toners and pads too; retinoids hide in more places than serums.

Generally considered fine

Hyaluronic acid, ceramides, panthenol, centella, niacinamide, vitamin C and azelaic acid, which is often suggested for breakouts and uneven tone.

Always worth it

Daily sunscreen: pregnancy can make skin more prone to pigmentation, and SPF is the simplest protection against it.

Pregnancy-Friendly Swaps for Common Skin Concerns

Pausing an active doesn't mean giving up on the result. These swaps use ingredients generally considered suitable during pregnancy. Confirm any change with your doctor or midwife.

Concern Usually paused Gentler alternatives
Fine lines, texture Retinol, retinal Peptides, hyaluronic acid, ceramides
Breakouts Leave-on salicylic acid, retinoids Azelaic acid, niacinamide, centella
Dark spots, uneven tone Hydroquinone, retinoids Vitamin C derivatives, niacinamide, azelaic acid, daily SPF
Dryness, sensitivity Fragranced products if they now irritate Fragrance-free toners, ceramide creams, overnight masks

Peptide and PDRN options are covered in our peptide guide, including which ones carry the Pregnancy-Friendly label.

Gentle Pregnancy-Friendly Picks: Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner vs Biodance Hydro Cera-nol Mask

A complete pregnancy-friendly routine in one set

If you'd rather not check every label, our Pregnancy-Friendly Routine (5-Step) combines a low-pH cleanser, a hydrating toner, an azelaic acid serum for breakouts and redness, a calming gel cream and a lightweight sunscreen, with no retinoids and no fragrance.

Patch-test again

Skin can react differently during pregnancy, even to familiar products. Test new ones on the jawline for a few days.

Devices

We recommend pausing electrical beauty devices, such as microcurrent or EMS, during pregnancy unless your doctor has cleared them.

Check every step

Retinoids appear in eye creams, toners and pads as well as serums. Look for the Pregnancy-Friendly label on each product.

Your Pregnancy Skincare Questions, Answered

What to pause, what's usually fine, and what our label means.

Which skincare ingredients should I avoid during pregnancy?

Retinoids (including retinol and retinal), hydroquinone and leave-on salicylic acid are the ingredients most commonly advised against. Always check with your doctor or midwife for advice specific to you.

Is niacinamide or vitamin C safe during pregnancy?

Both are generally considered suitable during pregnancy and are common alternatives for uneven tone and dullness. Confirm your routine with your doctor.

Can I use a BHA cleanser while pregnant?

Low levels of salicylic acid in a rinse-off cleanser are often considered acceptable because contact time is short; leave-on BHA toners and serums are usually paused. Our label reflects that distinction.

Is the Pregnancy-Friendly label medical advice?

No. It is a conservative ingredient screen. Pregnancy affects everyone differently, so please confirm your routine with your doctor or midwife.
