AESTURA Atobarrier 365: Cream vs Lotion, and How to Build the Barrier-Repair Routine
"In Korea, AESTURA is the brand your dermatologist mentions when you say the word 'sensitive'. Atobarrier began in 2008 as a cream you could only get through hospitals and skin clinics; today the 365 Cream is the best-selling cream at Olive Young five years running and the reason AESTURA is Korea's number-one derma facial-care brand. I have dry, reactive skin and an Alpine winter to get through every year, so when the full Atobarrier 365 line arrived at KKUMIDA I gave it six weeks — from the first radiator day to the first frost — to find out which of the four you actually need."
The short answer: Cream, Lotion, Essence or Ampoule?
Dry, flaky, stinging or eczema-prone? Start with the Atobarrier 365 Cream — it is the product the whole line is built around. Combination skin, or dry skin in summer? The Lotion gives you the same ceramide capsules in a texture that sinks in within a minute. Tight even when your skin looks fine? Add the Hydro Cera-HA Ampoule underneath. Want the whole routine to be gentle from step one? Replace your toner with the Hydro Essence. Nothing here contains fragrance, alcohol or a strong active — this is the base your skin recovers on, not a treatment you cycle on and off.
AESTURA is the dermocosmetic brand of Amorepacific, and its roots are pharmaceutical: the company began as Pacific Pharma in 1982, and the name is drawn from "estuary" — the place where two waters, medicine and beauty, meet. Atobarrier Cream launched in 2008 exclusively through dermatology clinics; the consumer Atobarrier 365 Cream reached Olive Young in 2018 and has won the retailer's cream award every year since 2021. Every product in the line is dermatologist-tested, hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, fragrance-free and alcohol-free. Three technologies do the work:
High-density ceramide capsules
A healthy barrier is a wall: skin cells are the bricks, and ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids are the mortar. Atobarrier packs long-chain and "linker" ceramides into visible capsules that melt as you spread the cream, so the ceramide stays in the barrier far longer than in a plain cream. In the Cream and the Lotion.
BMF™ moisturizing factors
Skin holds water with its own Natural Moisturizing Factors: amino acids, PCA, lactic acid, urea and minerals. Cleansing and a weak barrier drain them. BMF™ puts exactly those back, so hydration is restored where skin actually stores it. In the Hydro Essence.
Cera-HA™
Hyaluronic acid pulls water in, but on a weak barrier it escapes just as fast. Cera-HA™ bonds hyaluronic acid to ceramide, so the water is both delivered and kept — twice the moisture retention of hyaluronic acid alone. In the Ampoule.
How I tested. Six weeks, dry and reactive skin, hard Alpine tap water, radiators on from week two and two weekends at 1,500 metres. I used the full four-step routine morning and evening for the first three weeks, then split my face for a fortnight — Cream on the left cheek, Lotion on the right — to see where the two actually differ. Nothing stung at any point, which for my skin is itself a result. The details, and where each product earned its place, are below.

"My cheeks sting when I apply anything, flake by the afternoon, and the sensitive-skin creams from the pharmacy stopped working years ago."
AESTURA Atobarrier 365 Cream vs Lotion: Which Should You Buy?
Same ceramide capsules, same lipid structure, two textures. The split-face test settled it for me: the Cream is for skin that is actively dry or damaged, the Lotion for skin that needs the barrier support but not the weight. If you are choosing only one, read the fit notes honestly.
AESTURA Atobarrier 365 Cream (80ml)
AESTURA's second-generation barrier cream replaces all three barrier lipids — ceramide NP, cholesterol and fatty acids — in the same layered structure the skin uses, with squalane and phytosphingosine, and niacinamide and allantoin to calm redness. In the brand's clinical testing barrier strength improved after one application and sensitivity was reduced after four weeks. The texture is rich and cushiony with visible capsules that disappear as you spread it; it takes three to four minutes to settle but leaves no greasy film, and my sunscreen went over it without pilling. By the end of week one the afternoon flaking on my cheeks had stopped; by week three the stinging when I applied anything else had gone too. Fragrance-free, alcohol-free, non-comedogenic, pregnancy-friendly, and tested on eczema-prone skin.
Best for: dry, flaky, tight or reactive skin; a barrier damaged by over-exfoliation, retinol or winter; eczema-prone dryness; the last step at night, and the day step in cold months.Less suited to: oily or acne-prone skin, or anyone who wants a gel-light feel — choose the Lotion.
Editor’s tip: On a flaky patch, apply a thick layer and leave it as an overnight sleeping mask. And smooth it on with your palms rather than fingertips — the capsules melt more evenly and the finish is softer.

Sensitive skin loses water because it is short on ceramides, but it does not always want a rich cream. The Lotion delivers the identical high-density capsule technology with squalane, cholesterol and fatty acids, in a texture that sinks in within about a minute. In the brand's testing the damaged barrier improved twofold within 10 minutes, dead skin cells were reduced by 42% immediately and moisture on the cheeks, forehead and eye area kept rising over four weeks. On my split-face fortnight the Lotion side was every bit as calm as the Cream side and felt lighter under makeup — but on the two coldest mornings it was the side that felt tight by lunch. Fragrance-free, alcohol-free, non-comedogenic, pregnancy-friendly, and generous at 150ml for face and neck.
Best for: combination skin with dry patches; dry and sensitive skin that dislikes heavy creams; morning use under sunscreen; rough, flaky texture; the warmer months.Less suited to: very dry or eczema-prone skin in mid-winter as the only moisturizer — layer the Cream on top on those days.
Editor’s tip: Use the Lotion as your everyday moisturizer and keep the Cream for nights and cold snaps. The pump also makes it the easiest of the four to use on the neck and the backs of the hands, which suffer most from winter air.

Atobarrier 365 Hydro Essence vs Cera-HA Ampoule: Hydration Underneath the Cream
A moisturizer seals; it does not, on its own, put much water back. These two are the water steps, and they are different jobs: the Essence replaces your toner and refills the skin's own moisturizing factors, the Ampoule is the concentrated hyaluronic step that keeps that water where it belongs. Together they are why the full routine feels so different from the Cream alone.
AESTURA Atobarrier 365 Hydro Essence (200ml)
The BMF™ complex replaces the amino acids, PCA, lactic acid, urea and minerals that cleansing strips away, so hydration is restored inside the cells rather than sitting on top. A triple lipid complex of pseudo-ceramide, cholesterol and fatty acids helps seal it, and squalane softens. It is a 2-in-1 toner and essence: no cotton pad, just palms. In the brand's testing 97% of users said skin felt moisturized and 95% rated the absorption highly, and I can see why — it feels like water with a silk finish and it is gone in seconds. After hard-water cleansing it removed the tight feeling entirely, and layered three times on my cheeks it was a quiet stand-in for a hydrating mask. Fragrance-free, alcohol-free, non-comedogenic, pregnancy-friendly. Contains a low level of urea, so patch-test if your skin is extremely reactive.
Best for: dehydrated, tight skin; dry and sensitive skin; inner dryness under an oily surface; the "7-skin" layering method; replacing an alcohol toner that stings.Less suited to: anyone who wants exfoliation or oil control from the toner step — this only hydrates.
Editor’s tip: Apply to skin that is still slightly damp from cleansing, then a second and third thin layer on the cheeks, letting each sink in first. In a hard-water region this is the step that decides how the rest of the routine feels.
Shop The Hydro EssenceAESTURA Atobarrier 365 Hydro Cera-HA Ampoule (30ml)
On a compromised barrier ordinary hyaluronic acid draws water in and then lets it evaporate. Cera-HA™ bonds the hyaluronic acid to ceramide — the lipid that holds the barrier together — so moisture is delivered and kept, with twice the retention of hyaluronic acid alone. A triple lipid complex of cholesterol, sphingolipids and fatty acids mirrors the skin's own structure, niacinamide and panthenol calm, and a gentle vitamin C derivative adds a little brightness. In the brand's clinical testing the skin's glow index improved by 111%, and used under the 365 Cream hydration rose a further 124%. The texture is silky with a subtle richness, absorbs in about 30 seconds and never pills. It is the product I would add first if you already own the Cream and want visibly more. Fragrance-free, alcohol-free, non-comedogenic, pregnancy-friendly, suitable for eczema-prone skin.
Best for: dehydrated, tight skin; sensitive and barrier-damaged skin; dullness caused by inner dryness; anyone pairing it with the 365 Cream; skin recovering from retinol or acids.Less suited to: anyone expecting a treatment active (retinol, high-strength vitamin C) — it hydrates and repairs, it does not resurface.
Editor’s tip: A second layer on the cheeks and around the nose, where flaking starts first, before the Cream goes on. In the morning follow with sunscreen. If your skin is reacting to a new active, this is what I'd sandwich it between.

| 365 Lotion | Step 3 — day moisturizer | Ceramide capsules, faster-absorbing base | Combination, dry-but-not-flaky, summer, under SPF | Very dry skin in winter as the only step | Milky lotion, ~1 minute |

How to build your Atobarrier 365 routine: three versions
You do not need all four to get the result. Pick the version that matches your skin and your season, and add a step only when you notice what is missing.
The Minimal (2 steps)
Hydro Essence → 365 Cream. Cleanse, pat the essence on damp skin, seal with the cream. This is the routine for a barrier that is actively damaged, for the week after a peel or a retinol overshoot, and for anyone who simply won't do more than two steps. Sunscreen in the morning.
The Complete (4 steps)
Essence → Cera-HA Ampoule → Lotion (AM) or Cream (PM). The routine I ran for three weeks. Lotion by day for a light finish under SPF, Cream by night for the long hydration. Add a treatment active, if you use one, between the ampoule and the moisturizer.
The Alpine Winter (4 steps + 1)
Essence × 2 layers → Ampoule × 2 on cheeks → Lotion → Cream on top. Cold, dry mountain air and wind strip lipids faster than your skin replaces them. After a ski day, finish with a thick layer of Cream as an overnight mask. Our après-ski skin ritual explains why altitude is so hard on the barrier.
Whichever version you choose, the rule for hard tap water still applies — and most of Central and Northern Europe has it: the tightness you feel after washing is a mineral film, not dryness alone. Read why hard tap water makes skin tight and the one step that fixes it — then let the Hydro Essence do the rest.
Your AESTURA Atobarrier 365 Questions, Answered
Eczema-prone skin, layering with actives, breakouts, and how it compares with the barrier creams in a European pharmacy.
Is AESTURA Atobarrier 365 good for eczema-prone or very sensitive skin?
It is designed for exactly that skin. The whole line is hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, alcohol-free and dermatologist-tested, and the 365 Cream and Cera-HA Ampoule are tested by the brand on eczema-prone skin. What it does is cosmetic: it replaces the ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids a weak barrier is missing, which is why dry skin so often stops feeling sensitive with consistent use. It is not a medical treatment. If you have diagnosed atopic dermatitis, keep the plan your dermatologist gave you and ask before adding it, and patch-test the Hydro Essence, which contains a low level of urea.
Atobarrier 365 Cream vs Lotion: what is the difference, and can I use both?
Same high-density ceramide capsules, same barrier lipids; the difference is the base. The Lotion is milky and absorbs about 1.2 times faster, so it suits combination skin, warm months and mornings under sunscreen. The Cream is richer, hydrates for up to 120 hours and is the one for flaking, stinging or eczema-prone dryness. Yes, you can use both: Lotion in the morning and Cream at night, or Lotion first and Cream on top on very dry days. That is how AESTURA's own routine guide recommends it.
In what order do I use the Hydro Essence, Ampoule, Lotion and Cream?
Thinnest to thickest: Hydro Essence first (it replaces your toner, straight after cleansing), then the Cera-HA Ampoule, then the Lotion, then the Cream. Most people use either the Lotion or the Cream rather than both; if you use both, Lotion goes under Cream. Sunscreen is always the last morning step. Give the Cream three to four minutes before applying SPF and it will not pill.
Can I use Atobarrier 365 with retinol, vitamin C or exfoliating acids?
Yes, and that is one of its best uses. Because it contains no actives of its own, it sits happily alongside any of them and buffers the irritation they can cause. Apply your active after the Ampoule and before the Cream, or use the "sandwich" method: a thin layer of Lotion, then the retinol, then Cream on top. If you are new to vitamin A, our retinol for beginners guide walks through the schedule; the Atobarrier line is the base to run it on.
Is Atobarrier 365 fragrance-free and non-comedogenic? Will it break me out?
All four products are fragrance-free, alcohol-free and tested as non-comedogenic. The lipids it uses — ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids, squalane — are the ones already in your barrier rather than heavy occlusive oils. That said, if you are oily or acne-prone, choose the Lotion rather than the Cream and use it at night to start. Our fragrance-free standard explains why we ask that of every sensitive-skin product we stock.
How is AESTURA different from the barrier creams in a European pharmacy?
The French-pharmacy barrier creams on pharmacy shelves across Europe are excellent at occlusion: they lay a protective film over dry skin. Atobarrier 365 works one layer down. It delivers the missing barrier lipids in the skin's own 3-to-1 layered structure and holds the ceramide there in capsules, which is why the brand can measure barrier strength improving after one use rather than only surface moisture. The texture is also lighter and the finish less shiny, so it works under makeup and sunscreen where the classic pharmacy creams often don't. If you have loved those creams but found them heavy, this is the next step; if your skin is beyond dry and needs a thick protective seal for a few days, keep both.
