Anti-Aging vs Slow-Aging: The Korean Approach to Ageing Skin, Decade by Decade

"Anti-aging promises to erase; slow-aging aims to keep skin healthy for longer so there's less to fix later. The Korean term for the idea is jeo-sok no-hwa, literally 'low-speed ageing', and it has shaped how a whole generation in Seoul builds a routine: sunscreen first, barrier always, one active at a time. Here is what slow-aging means in practice, what to focus on in your twenties and thirties versus your forties and beyond, and which products I'd start with."

The short answer: what is slow-aging?

Slow-aging is a long-term approach: protect skin from UV every day, keep the barrier healthy, and add targeted actives gradually rather than chasing quick, aggressive results. Anti-aging tends to mean correcting lines and loss of firmness once they appear. In practice the two overlap; the difference is emphasis. A slow-aging routine at any age starts with daily sunscreen, which does more to prevent visible ageing than any serum.

Protect

Daily broad-spectrum SPF, all year. UV is the biggest external cause of visible skin ageing.

Support

A healthy barrier: gentle cleansing, hydration, ceramides. Irritated skin ages faster-looking.

Target

One active at a time: vitamin C, retinoids, peptides or PDRN, matched to your concern.

Be consistent

Most visible changes take three months or more. Consistency beats intensity.

Your Slow-Aging Questions, Answered

When to start, what matters most, and how long it takes.

Is 25 too early for anti-aging skincare?

No, but at 25 the priorities are daily sunscreen, a healthy barrier and antioxidants rather than strong actives. Retinoids can come later.

What is the single most effective slow-aging step?

Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen. UV is the biggest external cause of visible skin ageing, and no serum can make up for skipping it.

Can I use vitamin C and retinol together?

Use them at different times: vitamin C in the morning under sunscreen, retinoids at night.

How long until I see results?

Hydration and glow are immediate. Changes to fine lines, tone and firmness usually take three to six months of consistent use.
