Breakouts Before Your Period: Why Skin Flares, and a Gentle K-Beauty Routine for That Week

"Clear skin for three weeks, then, like clockwork, a cluster of sore spots along the chin and a T-zone that turns to an oil slick a few days before my period. If that's you too, you're far from alone, and it isn't something you're doing wrong. Here is what is actually happening to your skin in that week, what skincare can and can't do about it, and the four-step routine I switch to every month."

The short answer: why skin breaks out before a period

In the second half of the menstrual cycle, oestrogen falls while progesterone rises, and the influence of androgens on the skin becomes relatively stronger. The result for many people is more sebum, pores that clog more easily and more inflammation, usually showing up as breakouts along the chin and jawline in the week before a period. Studies suggest that around half or more of women with acne notice this premenstrual flare. Skincare can't change your hormones, but the right routine for that week can keep pores clearer and calm spots faster.

The first half

Rising oestrogen in the first half of the cycle tends to coincide with calmer, more hydrated skin for many people.

The week before

Oestrogen drops, progesterone peaks and androgens dominate: more oil, more congestion, and often a little puffiness.

What helps

Absorb excess oil, keep pores clear with a gentle BHA, calm active spots, and never skip moisturizer.

When to see a doctor. Skincare helps with mild to moderate breakouts. If you get deep, painful cysts, scarring, or breakouts alongside very irregular periods or new hair growth, see a dermatologist or gynaecologist: these can point to conditions that need medical treatment.

Unclog: SKIN1004 Clay Stick Mask and Benton Aloe BHA Toner

Start a few days before you usually break out. Clay absorbs the extra oil on the surface; a gentle BHA toner works inside the pore, where sebum and dead skin turn into blackheads and spots.

SKIN1004 Madagascar Poremizing Quick Clay Stick Mask (27g)

Kaolin, bentonite and pink salt in a twist-up stick: a three-minute clay mask you can swipe onto just the oily zones, with no jar and no mess.

Kaolin and bentonite clays absorb excess sebum and lift impurities from the surface of the pores, while centella keeps the skin calm. The stick format is what makes it realistic in a tired, hormonal week: swipe it on the nose, chin and forehead only, wait a few minutes, rinse. My T-zone stayed noticeably less shiny the next day. Fragrance-free, alcohol-free, vegan, pregnancy-friendly and made with clean ingredients.

Best for: oily, combination, acne-prone and sensitive skin; the oiliest week of your cycle; quick spot-masking.Less suited to: dry cheeks (keep it to the T-zone); daily use, as once or twice a week is plenty.

Editor’s tip: Don't let it dry until it cracks. Rinse while it's still slightly tacky so it absorbs oil without pulling moisture from the skin.

Benton Aloe BHA Skin Toner (200ml)

A gentle 0.5% salicylic acid toner on an aloe base: it works inside the pore to dissolve oil and dead skin, without the sting of stronger BHA products.

Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, so it can reach into pores and loosen the mix of sebum and dead cells that becomes a spot. At 0.5% it is gentle enough for regular use, and an aloe base instead of plain water keeps skin hydrated and calm. I use it from about a week before my period, every other evening, and it noticeably reduces how many new spots appear. Fragrance-free, alcohol-free, vegan, dermatologically-tested and made with clean ingredients. Not for use during pregnancy, as it contains leave-on salicylic acid.

Best for: oily, combination and acne-prone skin; blackheads and clogged pores; the week before your period.Less suited to: pregnancy; very dry or sensitised skin; nights you use retinol or other acids.

Editor’s tip: Every other evening is enough. Swipe it on with a cotton pad, focusing on the chin and nose, and follow with a moisturizer to keep the barrier happy.

Calm and Hydrate: Some By Mi Miracle Serum and IUNIK Centella Gel Cream

Once spots appear, the job changes from preventing to calming. A serum with tea tree and centella takes the heat out of active breakouts, and a light gel cream keeps skin hydrated, because dehydrated skin tends to produce even more oil.

Some By Mi AHA-BHA-PHA 30 Days Miracle Serum (50ml)

A shake-to-mix serum with nearly 15% centella extract, tea tree leaf water and mild AHA and PHA: calms angry spots while gently keeping skin smooth.

Centella asiatica extract makes up almost 15% of this serum, with about 10% tea tree leaf water and niacinamide to calm redness and help with oil. Mild AHAs and PHA gently smooth texture. It is bi-phase, so shake before each use. On active spots it noticeably reduced redness within a couple of days. Vegan, dermatologically-tested, pregnancy-friendly and made with clean ingredients.

Best for: sensitive, combination, oily and acne-prone skin; red, inflamed spots; the days a breakout appears.Less suited to: using on the same night as the BHA toner if your skin is sensitive; alternate the two instead.

Editor’s tip: Shake well, then press two or three drops over the face and an extra dab on each spot. Don't pick: it doubles the time a spot takes to fade.

IUNIK Centella Calming Gel Cream (60ml)

A light gel moisturizer with 72% centella leaf water and 10% tea tree leaf water: hydrates and cools breakout-prone skin without clogging pores.

Skipping moisturizer when skin is oily backfires: dehydrated skin can produce more oil. This gel cream hydrates with a base of centella leaf water and tea tree leaf water, feels cool on contact and absorbs within seconds, leaving no film. It's my moisturizer for the whole of that week. Alcohol-free, vegan, dermatologically-tested, pregnancy-friendly and made with clean ingredients.

Best for: sensitive, combination, oily and acne-prone skin; hot, inflamed skin; anyone who finds creams too heavy.Less suited to: dry skin in winter, which may need a richer cream on the cheeks.

Editor’s tip: Keep it in the fridge during that week; the extra cool helps with puffiness and sore spots.

The monthly plan: when to switch your routine

The trick is timing. Switch a few days before you usually break out, not when the spots have already appeared, and switch back afterwards so your skin isn't over-treated all month.

7–10 days before

Add the BHA toner every other evening and the clay stick once or twice on the T-zone. Keep cleansing gentle.

When spots appear

Calming serum morning and evening, extra on each spot. Alternate with the BHA toner rather than stacking them.

Every day

A light gel moisturizer and, in the morning, sunscreen: red marks darken faster in the sun.

Small habits

Fresh pillowcase, enough sleep, and hands off. Some evidence links high-sugar diets to breakouts, so it may be worth noticing.

Prefer a mask-based approach? The Mediheal Teatree mask and trouble pad are a gentle alternative for the same week.

Your Period Breakout Questions, Answered

Why it happens, what skincare can do, and when to get medical help.

Why do I break out before my period?

In the days before a period, oestrogen falls and progesterone peaks, so androgens have a relatively stronger effect on the skin. That tends to mean more sebum, more clogged pores and more inflammation, typically around the chin and jaw.

Can skincare stop hormonal breakouts?

It can reduce and calm mild to moderate breakouts, but it can't change the hormonal cycle behind them. If breakouts are deep, painful, scarring or don't improve after a couple of months, see a dermatologist, who can offer medical treatments.

Should I stop moisturizing when my skin is oily?

No. Dehydrated skin can produce more oil to compensate. Switch to a light gel cream such as the IUNIK Centella Calming Gel Cream rather than skipping the step.

Can I use BHA during pregnancy?

Leave-on salicylic acid products are generally avoided during pregnancy, which is why the Benton Aloe BHA Toner isn't labelled pregnancy-friendly. The clay stick, Miracle Serum and gel cream carry our Pregnancy-Friendly highlight. Always confirm your routine with your doctor or midwife; every product meeting our criteria is in the Pregnancy-Friendly collection.

When should I see a doctor about period acne?

If you have deep, painful cysts, scarring, breakouts that don't respond to a good routine, or acne alongside very irregular periods or unusual hair growth. A dermatologist or gynaecologist can check for underlying causes and offer treatment.
