Cleansing Balm vs Cleansing Oil: Which Korean First Cleanser to Choose (Even for Oily Skin)
"Balm or oil? It's the question I hear most about double cleansing, usually followed by 'but I have oily skin, so I shouldn't use either.' Both assumptions deserve a closer look. When I started curating cleansers for KKUMIDA, I put more than a dozen Korean bestsellers through the same four tests: remove waterproof mascara without rubbing, zero eye sting, a complete milky rinse with no film, and alignment with the KKUMIDA Six. Four passed, two balms and two oils. Here is how they differ and which one fits your skin."
The short answer: balm or oil?
They do the same job: dissolve makeup, sunscreen and sebum, then turn milky with water and rinse away. The difference is texture and feel. Choose a balm if you wear heavier makeup, like a cushioned massage, have normal to dry skin or travel a lot. Choose an oil if you want the lightest, quickest cleanse from a pump, have oily or combination skin, or prefer something that never feels rich. Oily skin can use either; what matters is that it emulsifies and rinses clean.
Cleansing balm
Solid, sorbet-like texture that melts into an oil on contact. More cushion and slip for massaging; leak-proof for travel. Same cleansing power as an oil.
Cleansing oil
A light liquid from a pump that spreads instantly. The fastest option, and the one oily and combination skin usually enjoys most.
The emulsifier
The ingredient that makes either one turn milky with water and rinse off completely. No proper emulsification means residue, and residue is what clogs pores.
How I tested. More than a dozen Korean oils and balms, each used for at least a week on my combination skin. Each one had to remove waterproof mascara and water-resistant SPF without rubbing, cause zero eye sting, rinse fully milky without a film, and meet our KKUMIDA Six standards. The four below are the ones that passed every test.

The Best Korean Cleansing Balms: Dr. Althea Pure Grinding Balm vs Beauty of Joseon Radiance Cleansing Balm
Both are fragrance-free sorbet balms that melt into oil and rinse clean. The difference is weight and packaging: Dr. Althea is fresher and lighter for oily and combination skin, Beauty of Joseon is richer and more nourishing for normal to dry skin.
Dr. Althea Pure Grinding Cleansing Balm (50ml)
The grinding dispenser is the reason this balm made the list: it keeps the product sealed and hygienic and gives you the right amount every time. Soothing plant oils melt makeup, sebum and water-resistant sunscreen within seconds, then emulsify into a light milk. It's the lightest-feeling balm I tested, which is why it suits oily and combination skin better than most balms do. Zero eye sting with waterproof mascara. Fragrance-free, alcohol-free, vegan, pregnancy-friendly and made with clean ingredients.
Best for: oily, combination and sensitive skin; anyone who wants a balm without a rich after-feel; hygienic, mess-free packaging.Less suited to: very dry skin that wants a more nourishing cleanse; anyone who prefers a large jar to scoop from (50ml goes faster than a 100ml tub).
Editor’s tip: Two twists is enough for a full face of makeup. Warm it between dry palms for a few seconds before it touches your face; it spreads further and you use less.
Shop The Grinding BalmBeauty of Joseon Radiance Cleansing Balm (100ml)
This is the more nourishing of the two balms. Rice bran water and grain extracts, staples of traditional Korean skincare, brighten and soften as you massage, while the balm breaks down makeup, sunscreen and hardened sebum in pores. It emulsifies cleanly, so it rinses off completely rather than leaving the greasy film some rich balms do. On my drier winter cheeks it was the most comfortable cleanse of all four. Fragrance-free, alcohol-free, vegan, dermatologically-tested, pregnancy-friendly and made with clean ingredients.
Best for: dry, normal and sensitive skin; heavy or waterproof makeup; anyone who wants a slow, nourishing evening ritual.Less suited to: very oily skin in summer, which may prefer a lighter oil; anyone who dislikes scooping from a jar (always use the spatula).
Editor’s tip: Use the spatula, never fingers, and keep the lid closed so the balm stays fresh. Massage for a full 60 seconds on makeup days: it is the time, not the pressure, that dissolves stubborn mascara.

The Best Korean Cleansing Oils: SKIN1004 Centella Light Cleansing Oil vs Haruharu Black Rice Deep Cleansing Oil
The two oils split along the same line as the balms: SKIN1004 is the feather-light, calming choice for sensitive and oily skin, Haruharu is the slightly richer, deep-cleansing option that leaves drier skin plump.
SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil (200ml)
Six botanical oils, including sunflower and jojoba, break down makeup, sunscreen and hardened sebum, and centella asiatica keeps sensitive skin calm while you massage. The texture is the lightest of all four: it spreads instantly, emulsifies the moment water touches it, and leaves no greasy film. It is formulated to be non-comedogenic, which is why it is my first recommendation for oily and breakout-prone skin that is nervous about oil cleansers. Alcohol-free, vegan, pregnancy-friendly and made with clean ingredients; not labelled fragrance-free.
Best for: oily, combination and sensitive skin; redness-prone skin; anyone trying an oil cleanser for the first time.Less suited to: fragrance-sensitive skin; very dry skin that wants a more cushioning cleanse.
Editor’s tip: Two pumps on dry hands, massage over a dry face, then add water a little at a time until the oil turns completely milky before rinsing. That milky stage is what takes the grime away.

Rice bran, olive and jojoba oils bind to sebum and makeup, so this is the oil I reach for after a long, heavy-makeup day. It is noticeably richer than the SKIN1004 oil but still emulsifies quickly and rinses without residue. Over a week of use the blackheads on my nose looked clearer, and my cheeks felt hydrated after rinsing rather than stripped. The unscented version is the one we stock. Fragrance-free, alcohol-free, vegan, dermatologically-tested, pregnancy-friendly and made with clean ingredients.
Best for: dry, sensitive and oily skin that wants a deep clean; blackheads; heavy makeup days; anyone who wants an oil that also leaves skin comfortable.Less suited to: anyone who wants the lightest possible texture; the SKIN1004 oil feels thinner.
Editor’s tip: On blackhead-prone areas, massage for an extra 30 seconds with small circles before you add water. It is gentle physical work that a foam cleanser can't do.

Can Oily Skin Use a Cleansing Oil? The Myth, Explained
It's usually the opposite. Sebum, sunscreen filters and long-wear makeup are oil-based, and water-based foams can't fully dissolve them; like dissolves like. A well-formulated cleansing oil binds to that oil, then emulsifies with water and rinses everything away, including the hardened sebum that turns into blackheads. Breakouts after an oil cleanser almost always come from incomplete rinsing, not from the oil itself. For oily and acne-prone skin we also stock the Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil, made specifically for congested pores.
| Product | Format | Best for | Less suited to | Texture & rinse |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dr. Althea Grinding Balm | Balm, grinding dispenser | Oily, combination, sensitive | Very dry skin | Light melt, fresh rinse |
| Beauty of Joseon Radiance Balm | Balm, jar with spatula | Dry, normal, sensitive; heavy makeup | Very oily skin in summer | Buttery, nourishing, clean rinse |
| SKIN1004 Centella Light Oil | Oil, pump | Oily, combination, sensitive; first-timers | Fragrance-sensitive skin | Almost watery, fastest rinse |
| Haruharu Black Rice Oil | Oil, pump | Dry, sensitive, oily; blackheads | Lightest-texture fans | Richer slip, plump after-feel |
All four are alcohol-free, vegan and pregnancy-friendly. The two balms and the Haruharu oil are also fragrance-free.
How to use a cleansing balm or oil correctly
Most problems people have with oil cleansers (breakouts, a greasy film, stinging eyes) come from how they use them, not from the product. Three rules fix almost all of it.
Dry hands, dry face
Apply the balm or oil to dry skin with dry hands and massage for 30 to 60 seconds. Water at this stage stops it dissolving makeup properly.
The milky step
Add a little lukewarm water and keep massaging until everything turns milky. That emulsification is what lets the grime rinse away instead of staying on your skin.
Rinse, then foam
Rinse thoroughly, then follow with a gentle low-pH foam or gel to remove the last traces. That is the double cleanse.

Your Cleansing Balm and Oil Questions, Answered
Oily skin, breakouts, waterproof mascara and whether you really need a second cleanse.
Is a cleansing balm or a cleansing oil better?
Neither is stronger; they do the same job. Choose by feel: a balm gives more cushion for massaging and suits normal to dry skin and heavy makeup, while an oil is lighter, faster and usually preferred by oily and combination skin. What matters more than the format is that it emulsifies and rinses clean.
Can oily or acne-prone skin use a cleansing oil?
Yes. Oil dissolves oil, so a cleansing oil removes sebum and sunscreen more thoroughly than a foam alone. Choose a light, non-comedogenic formula such as the SKIN1004 Centella Light Cleansing Oil or the Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil, emulsify it fully and follow with a gentle foam.
Do I need a second cleanser after a balm or oil?
On makeup and sunscreen days, yes: the second, water-based cleanser removes the last traces and leaves skin ready for the rest of your routine. On a bare-skin day you can skip the oil and use the foam alone.
Will a cleansing oil cause breakouts?
A well-formulated, properly rinsed oil cleanser shouldn't. Breakouts usually come from skipping the milky emulsifying step or rinsing too quickly, which leaves a film behind. Add water until the oil turns fully milky, rinse thoroughly and follow with a second cleanser.
Can I use a cleansing balm or oil to remove eye makeup?
Yes. All four picks removed waterproof mascara without rubbing and caused no eye sting in our testing. Hold the oil or balm over closed eyes for a few seconds to let it dissolve the mascara, then massage gently and rinse.
Are these cleansers pregnancy-friendly?
All four carry our Pregnancy-Friendly highlight and are alcohol-free and vegan. Always confirm your own routine with your doctor or midwife. Every product meeting our criteria is in the Pregnancy-Friendly collection.
