Peptides in Skincare: The 4 Types, What They Actually Do, and Which K-Beauty Product to Choose
"'Peptides' on a label can mean four very different things, and that is why two peptide serums can give completely different results. Some peptide types have a reasonable body of evidence behind them; others are mostly a marketing word. I read the full ingredient list of every peptide product we stock to sort out which families each one actually contains, then used the most promising ones for four weeks. Here is what peptides do, what they don't, and which product fits which skin."
The short answer: what peptides do, and where to start
Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins such as collagen. In skincare they act mostly as messengers: they help skin look firmer, smoother and calmer, gradually, without the irritation retinol can cause. Losing bounce and want a gentle first step? A multi-peptide serum like the Medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Serum. Sensitive, dry skin? The Klairs Midnight Blue Youth Activating Drop. Fine lines around the eyes? The ISNTREE TW-Real Eye Cream. Expect four to eight weeks before judging any of them.
Signal peptides
Palmitoyl pentapeptide-4, palmitoyl tripeptide-1, palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7. They tell skin to keep up its own firming work. The most studied family, and the backbone of most peptide serums.
Carrier peptides
Copper tripeptide-1, often called GHK-Cu. It delivers copper, a trace element skin uses in renewal and repair, and is associated with smoother, more resilient-looking skin.
Expression-line peptides
Acetyl hexapeptide-8 ("argireline") and pentapeptide-18. They aim to soften the look of lines from repeated movement. The effect in a cream is modest; it is not an injectable.
Growth-factor peptides
sh-Oligopeptide-1 (EGF) and sh-Polypeptide-1 (bFGF): lab-made versions of proteins skin uses to renew itself. Popular in Korea for recovery and bounce.
How I tested. First the ingredient lists: every peptide product we stock, sorted by which of the four families it contains and what else is in it. Then four weeks of use on my own dry, reactive skin, one product per side of the face where I could, and the eye creams under each eye. Peptides work slowly, so four weeks shows texture, comfort and bounce, not the full long-term picture. I've kept that honest below.

Best Korean Peptide Serum: Medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Serum vs Klairs Midnight Blue Youth Activating Drop
Two very different routes. Medicube blends five peptides from three families with salmon PDRN in a classic firming serum. Klairs is a short, minimal formula built on two growth-factor peptides and nothing much else. The first suits most skin that wants firmness; the second suits dry, sensitive skin that wants recovery.
Medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Serum (30ml)
The peptide complex covers signal peptides (palmitoyl pentapeptide-4, palmitoyl tripeptide-1, palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7), the carrier peptide copper tripeptide-1 and acetyl hexapeptide-8 for expression lines. Sodium DNA (PDRN) supports the look of skin renewal, and niacinamide and adenosine add brightening and smoothing. The peptides sit near the end of the ingredient list, which is normal: they work at very low concentrations. The texture is a light, slightly bouncy serum that absorbs in under a minute. After four weeks my cheeks looked smoother and felt springier, with no irritation at any point. Alcohol-free, dermatologically-tested and pregnancy-friendly; not labelled fragrance-free.
Best for: normal, dry and sensitive skin; early loss of firmness; anyone who wants a retinol-free firming step; a first peptide serum.Less suited to: fragrance-sensitive skin; anyone wanting a minimal, short ingredient list.
Editor’s tip: Use it morning and evening after toner. Want to know what the salmon PDRN in it does? The PDRN Revolution explains the ingredient in detail.
Shop The Peptide SerumDear, Klairs Midnight Blue Youth Activating Drop (20ml)
sh-Oligopeptide-1 (EGF) and sh-Polypeptide-1 (bFGF) are lab-made peptides modelled on the proteins skin uses to renew itself, and they are high on this short ingredient list. Guaiazulene, the blue compound from chamomile, gives the serum its colour and calms redness, and adenosine helps smooth. It is watery, layers without pilling, and leaves no film; on my dry cheeks it was the more comforting of the two serums, especially after a windy day. Fragrance-free, alcohol-free and vegan.
Best for: dry, sensitive, normal and combination skin; skin that feels depleted or stressed; a gentle night step; anyone who prefers short ingredient lists.Less suited to: anyone wanting a broad multi-peptide firming formula, and anyone pregnant or breastfeeding who prefers to avoid growth-factor ingredients without checking with a doctor first.
Editor’s tip: Two or three drops at night, then a moisturizer. The blue colour doesn't transfer, but give it a minute before your cream so it stays where you put it.

Best Peptide Eye Cream: ISNTREE TW-Real Eye Cream vs Medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Eye Cream
The eye area is where peptides make the most sense: the skin is thin, it moves constantly, and it reacts quickly to strong actives. The real choice here is whether you want retinol in your eye cream or not.
ISNTREE TW-Real Eye Cream (30ml)
This is the broadest peptide formula we stock: signal peptides (palmitoyl pentapeptide-4, palmitoyl tripeptide-1), expression-line peptides (acetyl hexapeptide-8, pentapeptide-18) and three growth-factor peptides, on a base of 61% bifida ferment lysate, a probiotic ferment that supports the barrier. Niacinamide helps brighten and adenosine smooths. The texture is cushiony but not greasy, and it sat well under concealer. After four weeks the fine lines at the outer corners looked softer and the area felt less papery. Fragrance-free, alcohol-free, dermatologically-tested and pregnancy-friendly.
Best for: normal and dry skin; early fine lines; thin, dry under-eyes; anyone who wants a retinol-free eye cream, including during pregnancy.Less suited to: deeper set lines where a retinoid would do more; puffiness, which a caffeine formula targets better.
Editor’s tip: A rice-grain amount per eye, tapped along the orbital bone with the ring finger, morning and night. Every eye cream we stock is compared in the K-Beauty Eye Care Dictionary.
Shop The TW-Real Eye CreamMedicube PDRN Pink Peptide Eye Cream (30ml)
The peptide complex mirrors the Medicube serum (copper tripeptide-1, acetyl hexapeptide-8 and three signal peptides), but this cream adds retinol for smoothing, caffeine for morning puffiness and niacinamide for brightness, with sodium DNA (PDRN) for renewal. In the brand's testing firmness and moisture improved after one week. The texture is light and absorbs quickly. Because it contains retinol, I used it in the evening only, and it was the one that made the biggest visible difference to the lines at the outer corner. Fragrance-free, alcohol-free and dermatologically-tested. Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Best for: normal, dry and sensitive skin that already tolerates retinol; set-in fine lines; puffiness and dark-looking under-eyes.Less suited to: pregnancy and breastfeeding; very reactive eyes new to retinol (start every other night); daytime use without sunscreen.
Editor’s tip: Evenings only, and start three nights a week. New to retinoids altogether? Read Retinol for Beginners before you start.

Peptide Delivery Explained, and Where a Spicule Booster Fits In
Peptides are larger than many actives, so how a formula delivers them matters as much as which ones it contains. Good formulas help with fatty "palmitoyl" tails, light textures that layer early in the routine, and supporting humectants. A spicule booster is the optional extra: it is not a peptide product, but it can make what follows feel more active. It is also the most intense product in this guide.
VT Cosmetics Reedle Shot 300 (50ml)
The Reedle Shot uses microscopic, cica-infused silica spicules that create a tingling, prickly sensation as you press it in, with niacinamide and adenosine in the formula. The 300 is the stronger level in the range; the Reedle Shot 100 is the gentler entry point. On my skin it was a firm tingle for a few minutes, then smoother texture by the next morning, and the peptide serum I applied after it felt like it absorbed faster. I would not use it on reactive days. Fragrance-free, alcohol-free, dermatologically-tested and pregnancy-friendly.
Best for: combination and dry skin used to active products; rough texture; a once-or-twice-weekly boost before a peptide serum.Less suited to: very sensitive, reactive or broken skin, and anyone new to actives; start with the Reedle Shot 100 instead.
Editor’s tip: Press it in, don't rub, then wait a minute and follow with the Medicube or Klairs serum. Never on the same night as acids or retinol, and always patch-test first.

How to use peptides in your routine
Peptides are among the easiest actives to fit into a routine. They are gentle, they work at any time of day, and they pair with almost everything.
Where they go
After cleansing and toner, before moisturizer: thinnest to thickest. Eye cream after serum. Morning and evening is fine; sunscreen is still the last morning step. Where serums sit next to toners and essences is explained in toner vs essence vs serum vs ampoule.
What they pair with
Niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, ceramides and centella all layer well. Keep pure vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) and strong acids for a different time of day, especially with copper peptides.
With retinol
They work well together and peptides can make a retinoid routine more comfortable. If you are sensitive, use retinol at night and peptides in the morning, or alternate nights.
Peptides are one of several gentle routes to firmer-looking skin; the K-Beauty Serum Dictionary compares them with the other anti-ageing serums we stock.
Your Peptide Questions, Answered
What they do, how they compare with retinol, what to combine them with, and how long to wait.
What do peptides do in skincare?
Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as messengers. Depending on the type, they support the look of firmness (signal peptides), deliver copper for renewal (carrier peptides), soften the look of expression lines (acetyl hexapeptide-8) or support recovery (growth-factor peptides). Results are gradual and gentle: smoother, bouncier-looking skin over weeks rather than days.
Are peptides better than retinol?
Not better, different. Retinol has the stronger evidence for fine lines and texture but can cause dryness and irritation, and it is not used during pregnancy. Peptides are gentler and suit sensitive skin and pregnancy-friendly routines, with more modest results. Many people use both: retinol at night, peptides in the morning.
Can I use peptides with vitamin C or retinol?
Yes. With retinol they layer well; if you are sensitive, alternate nights or use peptides in the morning. With pure vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) and strong acids, use them at different times of day, particularly copper peptides. Niacinamide and hyaluronic acid can go on together with any peptide.
How long do peptides take to work?
Give any peptide product four to eight weeks of daily use before judging it. Hydration and comfort show within days; changes in the look of fine lines and firmness take longer and build with consistency. Daily sunscreen protects whatever progress you make.
Are peptide products safe during pregnancy?
Most signal, carrier and expression-line peptides are considered gentle, and the Medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Serum and ISNTREE TW-Real Eye Cream carry our Pregnancy-Friendly highlight. Growth-factor peptides (EGF, bFGF) are a question some people prefer to check with their doctor, and any product containing retinol, such as the Medicube Pink Peptide Eye Cream, is not for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Every product meeting our criteria is in the Pregnancy-Friendly collection.
Do peptide eye creams help with dark circles?
Partly. Peptides mainly target fine lines and thin, crepey skin. Dark circles from pigmentation respond better to brightening ingredients such as niacinamide, and puffiness to caffeine, which is why the best eye creams combine them. The K-Beauty Eye Care Dictionary matches an eye cream to each kind of dark circle.
