Are We Really Using K-Beauty Right?
"Tourists emptied shelves in Seoul. Idols made products sell out overnight. Now K-beauty is on the shelves of department stores and beauty chains across Europe. It looks like a happy ending, but somewhere along the way, the heart of K-beauty got a little lost in the hype. This is why I started KKUMIDA, and how we decide what is worth your skin."
The short answer: what K-beauty really is
K-beauty was never meant to be a trend or a ten-step rulebook. At its best it is a philosophy: be kind to your skin barrier, prevent rather than repair, hydrate generously, and be patient. Using K-beauty "right" means choosing products for what your own skin needs, not for what went viral this week, and understanding why each one is in your routine.
Kindness to the barrier
The first question in a Korean bathroom isn't "does this look good?" but "is this gentle, and is it good for my skin long-term?"
Understanding over hype
A product that suited an idol on screen isn't automatically right for your skin, your climate or your water. Knowing why it works is the point.
Design, not rules
KKUMIDA (꾸미다) means "to design". Three steps on a tired night, seven on a slow Sunday: the routine should fit your life.
"Do we really know what we're putting on our skin, or are we just following whatever is trending right now?"
From Seoul's Shopping Streets to Europe's Beauty Shelves
There was a time when visitors came to Korea and simply emptied every beauty store they could find. K-pop, dramas, idols: if a product appeared on screen, it sold out the next week. It was exciting, and a little bit crazy.
Today you can walk into a department store in Zurich, Paris or Berlin and see K-beauty shelves right in front of you: sheet masks, essences, toners and cushions, lined up neatly. On the outside, K-beauty has conquered the world. But I kept coming back to the same question.
"Which product goes first? Is this ingredient okay for sensitive skin? And if an idol used this cream once, is it right for me?"
The Question I Couldn't Ignore
I grew up in Korea, in a culture where skincare is not only about looking pretty but about respecting your skin. My friends and family didn't ask "does this look good?"; they asked "is this gentle, and is it good for my skin long-term?"
Then I moved to Switzerland and watched friends discover K-beauty with so much curiosity, and just as much confusion. Why ten steps? Which order? Will this work with hard tap water and dry, heated winters? In all that noise, the original heart of K-beauty, kindness to the skin, was getting harder to see.
"This one is worth your skin. This one, you can skip."
Why I Created KKUMIDA: A Bridge, Not Just Another Store
That was the moment KKUMIDA was born: as a bridge between the innovation of Korean skincare and your daily routine in Europe; between "I saw it on TikTok" and "I know why this works for my skin." I wanted KKUMIDA to feel like the friend who has already read every ingredient list for you, tested the products, and can gently tell you which ones are worth it.
How we curate: three questions every product has to answer
We don't bring in a product because it is popular. Every one has to pass the same questions before it reaches our shelves.
What's inside?
Is the formula kind to the skin barrier? Are the ingredients supported by current research? We read the full ingredient list of every product before it goes on sale.
How does it feel and fit?
Does the texture work in a real morning and evening routine? Does it layer well? Does it make sense for European climates, hard water and heated winters?
Does it meet the Six?
Every product is labelled against our six standards: alcohol-free, fragrance-free, vegan, clean ingredients, dermatologist-tested and pregnancy-friendly, so you can shop by the values that matter to you.
The thinking behind each standard is in Meet the Six: KKUMIDA's map to honest skincare, starting with why we care about alcohol-free formulas and the fragrance-free standard.
"Not 'I hope this works', but 'I understand why this could be right for me.'"
Bringing the Heart of K-Beauty Back
When you pick something up from KKUMIDA, I want you to feel calm, not overwhelmed. K-beauty at its best is a gentle, thoughtful way of caring for your skin with patience, respect and curiosity. My wish is to bring that heart back into every product we share with you: not as a ten-step rule you must follow, but as a flexible, realistic routine that feels good for your skin and your life.
Your Questions About KKUMIDA, Answered
What our name means, how we choose products, and where to start.
What does KKUMIDA mean?
KKUMIDA (꾸미다) is Korean for "to design" or "to decorate". It reflects how we see skincare: not a fixed set of rules, but a routine you design around your own skin, goals and life.
How does KKUMIDA choose which products to sell?
Every product is reviewed for its full ingredient list, how it feels and layers in a real routine, and how it suits European climates and water. Each one is then labelled against the KKUMIDA Six: alcohol-free, fragrance-free, vegan, clean ingredients, dermatologist-tested and pregnancy-friendly. All products are 100% authentic, sourced through official brand channels and authorized distributors.
